In an era in which antiÂsemitism seems to be everyÂwhere, R. Derek Black’s memÂoir, The Klansman’s Son, is frightÂenÂingÂly timeÂly. Black grew up as the ultiÂmate white supremaÂcist. Black’s mothÂer was once marÂried to KKK Grand WizÂard David Duke; their father, Don Black, was a proud KKK leader whose hero was Adolf Hitler. ThroughÂout Derek’s childÂhood, Don shepÂherdÂed his son to ralÂlies. There, crowds with loud voicÂes (and someÂtimes torchÂes) were encourÂaged to vent their growÂing grudges against their “eneÂmies.” Chief among these eneÂmies are the Jews, schemÂing to weakÂen the white world through inteÂgraÂtion and othÂer libÂerÂalisms in order to replace white peoÂple. Next on the list are peoÂple of colÂor. (Young Derek loved their ConÂfedÂerÂate cosÂtume and flag, a tribÂute to the good old days.) Then come the immiÂgrants from anyÂwhere but NorthÂern Europe. These “aniÂmals” roam across our borÂder, eager to drug, rape, and then murÂder decent, law-abidÂing white Americans. The resÂoÂluÂtion of the conÂflict Derek experienced when he went off to college and saw many other points of view form the high point of the memÂoir. FindÂing out how this child of neo-Nazis shiftÂed so draÂmatÂiÂcalÂly to the othÂer side of the ideÂoÂlogÂiÂcal specÂtrum is fasÂciÂnatÂing — and, in our times, exemÂplary and educational.
