Adult Education: Mardi Gras Dirty Little Secret
Tuesday, March 4, 2025 • 4 Adar 5785
7:00 PM - 9:00 PMCongregation EmethWhen you hear the words “New Orleans Mardi Gras” you might think of “masking”, “drunken revelry”, and “debauchery”. You would not be wrong! However, if you suspect that there may be something more to a city-wide celebration so popular with visitors that the number of people in the city doubles in size, and so attractive to the vast majority of locals - including families with children - that year after year they invest their time, money and energy to participate in its colorful traditions, you would also be correct.
Congregation Emeth is hosting a program at 7 p.m. on the evening of March 4th that will offer a peek into the multitude of big messy parades, balls, parties, and festivities that make up what New Orleanians refer to as “the Carnival Season.” Join us then to find out more about Mardi Gras’ historical and religious underpinnings, its multiple forms of celebration, and even its dirty little secrets. New Orleans’ style refreshments to follow.
About our Presenter:
After law school, Julie Schwartz was lured down to New Orleans by a federal judicial clerkship and a rock and roll lead guitarist named David Radlauer. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina almost convinced them to move elsewhere. Instead, they returned, and Julie’s love for her adopted hometown blossomed.
In 2008, she became a licensed tour guide, leading tours of the French Quarter and Garden District for Friends of the Cabildo, Visit New Orleans, and Gray Line. She has also served as a local guide for Tauck’s New Orleans’ Jazz Tour. In 2010, she developed a Jewish Tour of New Orleans that she presented to hundreds of individuals and groups, including Jewish Federations, JCC’s, synagogues, and Hadassah chapters.
We hope you come and enjoy!

Sunday, Jun 1st 5:00p to Monday, Jun 2nd 5:00a
On Sunday/Monday, June 1 and 2, we will celebrate the holiday of Shavuot. There is a tradition of late-night studying to accompany the holiday, called Tikkun Leil Shavuot, and I am proud to promote a wonderful study opportunity for members of our congregation produced in partnership with URJ Small Congregations. On that evening, there will be about 25 learning blocks spread over different hours where you can join by Zoom. It just so happens that Rabbi Dantowitz will be teaching a class at 8:00 PM PT that night - and I welcome members of our congregation to join me. But you may choose any class/classes that interest you throughout the programming. If you would like to join me, it would be great to see you online as we welcome friends from around the country. I invite you to register for the program so you can receive the link where all of the classes will be listed closer to the night of the program. Elizabeth Mandel will lead our discussion on the book, Tap Dancing on Everest: A Young Doctor's Unlikely Adventure by Dr. Mimi Zieman. Please register to receive the zoom link. Dr. Mimi Zieman was 25 and in her third year of medical school when she made a courageous but unexpected decision: She would join four climbers as they attempted a new route up the rarely traversed East Face of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world above sea level. The ascent would be without sherpas, guides or supplemental oxygen to deal with the thinning air at extreme altitudes. She would be the only woman and the only medical support on the ascent. The book also explores how her Jewish identity, shaped by a father who survived the Holocaust and an Israeli mother who immigrated to the United States, provided her with the stamina and spirituality to overcome the mental and physical challenges of the Everest expedition.
