Social Action Committee

The Emeth Social Action Committee participates in and organizes many programs such as distributing Tzedakah funds to various charities, food and clothing drives, distributing meals supplied by Jewish Family Services to the housebound congregants, feeding the needy and helping our B’nai Mitzvah students find a mitzvah project.Lord

One of our regular events is preparing a meal to feed the needy at the Lord’s Table in Gilroy. Once a month, the Social Action Committee organizes an opportunity for our members to volunteer at the Lord’s Table Soup Kitchen, preparing the meal, serving dinner, and cleaning up.

Each High Holiday season, we collect sacks of non-perishable food items and donations for Mazon. In the winter, we have a warm clothing drive. The donated clothing is distributed amongst the needy after we have served Christmas lunch at the Lord’s Table.

In addition to our regular activities, the social action committee sponsors one major event per quarter, such as:

  • Providing Christmas dinner at the Lord’s Table Soup Kitchen so Christian workers may spend the day with their families.
  • Special High Holy Day food drive
  • Year-round food drive and clothing collection
  • Animal shelter supplies collection
  • The Silicon Valley Jewish Federation’s annual Mitzvah Day (volunteer activities throughout the cities in Silicon Valley)
  • Distributing tzedakah (charity) funds on a bi-monthly basismoney for worthy causes such as:
    • American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life
    • Magen David Adom (Israel’s Emergency Ambulance Services)
    • URJ Hurricane Relief Fund
    • Mazon (food for those in need)
    • Meals on wheels for a senior center in San Benito County
    • American Friends of Parents Circle
    • Israel Association for Ethiopian Jews

The committee also leads programs concerning Israel and promoting tolerance programs in the community.

If you have any suggestions and/or wish to volunteer for any programs please please contact us.
